MS. GAIL FREEMAN: IVF is a procedure where the eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries and placed in a petri dish where they are fertilized with their husband's sperm. To get to that point, we need to stimulate the woman to produce multiple eggs, that's done by using the injectable medications, Gonadotropins, in which she would have to take them two to three times a day. From the start of an IVF procedure to the end of an IVF procedure is about four weeks time. The procedure itself is done under ultrasound and the woman is put to sleep during the time, so she really doesn't feel anything.
She may have some mild cramping afterwards, and we are more than happy to give her pain medication if she is uncomfortable. Then when we put the embryos back she is awake during that time, and she might just have a little mild cramping. We do ask them to rest for the day that the embryos are put back, and to be a little less active the day after that. Other then that her activities really are not restricted. There are some risks to IVF, as there are risks to any procedure that is done. But very rarely do we see that. The most common risk is hyper stimulation of the ovaries, where the patient is uncomfortable about a week after the procedure.
