DR. NANCY DURSO: PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is the most common metabolic disorder in women of reproductive age. The symptoms consist of irregular periods, increased male hormone, acne, hair on the face, and increased weight. There is no one test to diagnose PCOS, and it is the combination of the symptoms and the tests that give us the diagnosis. PCOS is also related to insulin resistance, which is a pre-diabetic condition and needs to be diagnosed whether you're trying to conceive or not. The treatment when you're trying to conceive involves ovulation medications. I also treat patients who are not trying to conceive with PCOS with a combination of medications that's appropriate for the symptoms.
