MS. GAIL FREEMAN: In the Washington area we have many women who choose to be single parents. And we provide a service to them to give them that opportunity. We work with a number of sperm banks, both in the area and throughout the country, give the patients their options, and they go and find the sperm that they want to use. Depending on how fertile they are they've basically got three options. One is to do a natural cycle, totally unmonitored, where they monitor for their ovulation. Another one is to do a monitored natural cycle, where we check them at mid-cycle to see if they're producing a follicle, and then give them a medication that forces the ovulation so we can time the insemination better. And the third way is to do medicated inseminations, either using Clomid or injectable medications, Gonadotropins. We generally recommend two inseminations per cycle. Frozen sperm does not survive as long as fresh sperm does. Success rates depend on patient's age, the patient's fertility, because even if they're single they too can have fertility issues. Not just that they don't have a partner. The first step in treating a single woman is they need to come in and speak with Dr. Durso, and discuss what all their options are.
