DR. NANCY DURSO: Sometimes reproductive surgery is necessary, especially in cases of endometriosis or fibroids. I try to perform minimally invasive surgery whenever possible. This involves using a tube with a light on it called a laparoscope or hysteroscope, and uses only small incisions. The patient in most cases can go home the same day and has only a few days recovery. Occasionally an open incision is necessary with a short hospital stay and a few weeks of recovery. I was trained during the time when IVF was just becoming popular, and so reproductive surgery was more important. I've done many surgeries since 1989 when I finished my training.
