DR. NANCY DURSO: Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a procedure that we use for men with mild male infertility, or couples with unexplained infertility. An insemination is done here in the office. And a sample is collected from the man, and is then processed, which is a procedure called washing, which takes about a half an hour to 45 minutes. Then a catheter is placed in the woman's uterus and the sample is inserted. There is a little bit of cramping in some women at that time, but most women tolerate it very well. We have you rest for about 15 minutes afterwards. Then you can go back to work but no heavy lifting, exercising, or swimming on the day of insemination. We then wait the two weeks and see if you've conceived.
