NOW PLAYING: Ovulation Stimulation

MS. GAIL FREEMAN: There are essentially two methods of stimulating ovulation. The first one is a pill called Clomid or Clomiphene Citrate. It's taken for five days with ovulation generally occurring between day 12 and day 14. We can monitor when you're going to ovulate using ultrasound at mid-cycle. With Clomid, using Clomid there's a three to ten percent chance of having twins, and a less than one percent chance of having more than twins. It's a mild ovulation stimulant, can be used on most patients, either patients who we have no known cause for their infertility, or patients who are not ovulating regularly. If a patient is not responding to the Clomid, or after a few cycles, three to four cycles of Clomid they're not getting pregnant, then we can move onto another drug called Gonadotropins, which are injectable medications, which work directly on the ovary. There's a 20 percent risk of twins with the injectable medications, and they do have to be monitored more closely, because there's other risk of hyper stimulation of the ovaries. So we monitor using blood work and sonograms at an interval of about three to four times during this cycle. Again, ovulation is expected between about day 12 and day 14. We teach the individuals how to give the shots themselves, and even the most squeamish have learned how to give themselves shots.
