Minimal Stimulation IVF

By ndurso on October 23, 2008

Minimal stimulation IVF was created to allow patients to have the ability to undergo IVF for a lower package price.  It also involves fewer days of injections and fewer days of  office visits to disrupt your schedule. The minimal stimulation protocol can be used by patients without insurance who want to utilize the lower cost package or by patients with insurance who want to have fewer injections.

The cycle starts with a baseline sonogram and blood test with the start of a period to ensure that the ovaries are clear of cysts.  The medication protocol involves taking Clomid pills for 5 days then taking once daily injections of Menopur for 2 days.  Another sonogram and blood test is done at this point.   A second shot of a medicine to control the ovulation is added at this point.  Some women are ready for retrieval and some need 2-3 more days of injections.  When the sonogram and blood work shows that the follicles are mature a final shot is given that is precisely timed to the egg retrieval.

On the day of retrieval a light anesthesia is used for the procedure. Usually, between 3-5 eggs are removed.  The man produces a sample on the day of retrieval and either standard insemination or ICSI can be done.  The embryos are transferred a few days later and progesterone supplementation is used.  Pregnancy rates are based on age and are similar to standard IVF.
